After making my buttered bourbon, the next logical step was to use it in an Old Fashioned. Initially, I thought I'd made a mistake with the cask strength Maker's Mark, but after drinking it kept the flavour of the bourbon in pace with the other flavours.
- 50g buttered bourbon
- 5g (1tsp) maple syrup
- 1.5g Angostura bitters
- A slice of blood orange
Why a blood orange? It's fancy. This is a fancy cocktail. That and they're a bit sweeter: I find they stand up well to the rest of the ingredients, and the slice is even more delicious to eat at the end.
- Mix the bourbon and syrup in a glass.
- Add bitters: I like to go strong, 3-5 dashes gets about 1.5g. Mix again.
- Add your slice of blood orange, juicing a little.
- Freeze until ready to drink (I like to leave it in there for an hour).
