I have been an enthusiastic cyclist since I was told I could either have more pocket money, or buy my own bus pass. I chose more money, and more cycling. To say it has been a defining feature of my strand would be an understatement.
Cycling has a lot of benefits I enjoy: accidental exercise, low cost, but especially when in America, I notice now I am in the environment I’m passing through. I’m not in an air-conditioned glass and metal box: I’m breathing the air, feeling the temperature, smelling the life around me.
In a car, one is isolated. Apart. A car fort that one looks out at the world through. On my bike, I can’t miss the life around me.
In a car, I don’t think I would have looked up and seen the evening light on this apartment building, but with no roof, I couldn’t miss it.
